Happy New Year everyone! Glad to see you have made it out from under the piles of presents and the avalanche of food. I don’t know about you, but I am definitely going to need to get back into shape after the holidays… and not just physically, socially as well.

If you haven’t already noticed, the online world moves very quickly. There are new social networks popping up each day, bloggers are wondering what’s next and learning to adapt, some have even gone as far as to suggest the whole “social media” phase of the internet is over!

Every day things change slightly, so it doesn’t hurt to take a step back from your day-to-day hustle and examine your social strategy. Is it working? Now that you have 1, 2, 3 years of experience, does it need to be adjusted? It’s important to understand that social media is always changing; what worked today might not work tomorrow, so always be testing, evaluating and adjusting as needed.


And don’t worry, it’s all easier than you think! To help you along I’ve created this handy-dandy social media strategy worksheet that will allow you to evaluate and adjust your social media strategy accordingly. After all, we want you in the best shape for 2015!

Last night at my monthly WINC meeting, I had the opportunity to hear the very talented and inspiring Susan Cranston speak about time management and goal setting skills. What really caught my attention was Susan’s ideas about effective and ineffective workflow. It’s a simple theory; putting urgent things first creates and ineffective workflow, while putting important things first creates an effective workflow. The analogy she presented was how business owners often put the clock before the compass, leading to stress, poor time management and a sense of urgency in your life. In order to find a good balance, you need to put the compass before the clock; understand where you are going, what your short term & long term goals are, and focus on what’s important vs. what is urgent.

Susan also shared some helpful tips on taking a look at your life the way it is, and comparing it to how you want it to be. What things do you want to start doing? What things will you stop doing, re-prioritize, or delegate? Understanding what your core needs are can assist you in shaping the life you want to live.

It seems Susan’s advice comes at a great time for me. My business turned 2 years old on the first of this month, which has opened my eyes to all that I have achieved in these past two years, but has also made me realize where I need to improve. Moving through 2014 I plan to work on some long term and short term goals, as well as my time management skills.

I wanted to start this post off with the typical New Year opener “I can’t believe it’s already 2014,” but the fact of the matter is I CAN believe it’s already 2014! Last year was a very busy year for me. Not only did it fly by in a flash, but it was packed full of fun & learning! Time flies when you’re having fun, right? But now it’s time to put ideas and strategies to paper, and set goals for the coming year. I learned a lot last year, and I am going to take those key learnings and experiences and start 2014 off the right way!

Here are 5 Ways I Am Starting the New Year Off Right

  1. Evaluate What Worked & What Didn’t // I am all for “if at first you don’t succeed, try try again,” but in some cases there is no sense in beating a dead horse. To start 2014 off right, I am taking an in-depth look at what worked for my business in 2013, and what didn’t work. I’m looking to lose the dead weight and focus on what matters.
  2. Understand & Appreciate My Value // Whether you’re an entrepreneur, small business owner, or even a blogger, we struggle with understanding and appreciating the value we provide others. More often than not this internal struggle is reflected in our pricing. For some reason I always second guess myself when it comes to price, but in 2014 I will be confident in the price I put forward while understanding that I am providing value to my clients so there should be no reason to feel ashamed or afraid.
  3. Build Up an Email List // Ongoing communications with current clients and potential clients is extremely important. Also, providing your most dedicated clients and followers with exclusive content is a great way to thank them for supporting you. This year I am launching a brand new monthly e-newsletter called “Get Social” which will provide subscribers with exclusive tips, information, and how-to’s.
  4. Look At The Web With Mobile In Mind // In November my website went through a little overhaul with one thing in mind, the mobile experience. With more and more users accessing websites via a mobile device, it’s important to look at all your business assets (website, social sites, etc) with a mobile eye. Responsive design, engaging visuals, and online optimization is key in 2014.
  5. Strike A Good Work/Life Balance // In 2013 I worked a lot. There were late nights, weekends away, and week long work trips. Although I was able to tear myself away for two weeks of vacation, I came back feeling more overwhelmed than when I left. Finding the perfect work/life balance can be difficult, but if it means taking on one less client or implementing a waiting list, I’ll do what’s necessary to take some “me/family” time.
